Leaning the basics of Crochet than varying the size of the hook and yarn will expand what you can create, from scarves to blankets, with practice and patients sweaters, hats, slippers and decorations as you learn more stitches.
The first step is to learn the Single Crochet stitch, how to turn and stitch your next row. We not going to worry about the hook size or type of yarn for now. So grab a crochet hook (G is most common) and a skein of yarn and lets get started.
There are many illustrations for holding your hook, the most comfortable to me is like a pencil, held by your index finger and thumb resting on your middle finger.
The first step to any pattern is the foundation row and the beginning of Crochet Basics
Make a slip knot about 6 inches from the end of the yarn. Make a loop with the yarn, insert the hook through the loop, hook the yarn and pull through the loop pull the end of the yarn to tighten the loop onto the hook. Hold knot of the slip knot with your index finger and thumb of your other hand, the yarn should lay over your index and middle finger. Slip the hook under the yarn and grab the yarn pulling it though the stitch on your hook. Repeat this 28 more times (you will have 30 stitches) holding the chain to keep the tension. You have made what is called a foundation stitch.
The next stitch will be consider Row 1
Insert your hook in second stitch from hook, under the top loop. Draw a loop as you did for the foundation and pull the loop through the stitch. You will have two loops on the hook. Bring the yarn over the hook again and pull the loop through both loops. You’ve made your first single crochet and will have one loop remaining on hook. Repeat the stitch to the last stitch.
At the end of the row make 1 chain stitch (same as you did for the foundation), turn the item so that you will be going back over the stitches you just completed. Single crochet in the top of the single crochet.
Repeat the rows until your project is about 3 feet long.
Congratulations you have completed your first project and a scarf.
